Managing MCP tools

Agentstudio checks updates to MCP(Model Context Protocol) servers automatically to keep you up-to-date on changes. If an MCP server makes an update to tools, server description, or parameters, an MCP tool displays as Stale, indicating that you need to receive server updates.

Agentstudio gives you full control over change management and agent security by not automatically updating tools. Tool updates may alter agent responses, requiring developers to implement new guardrails or instructions to ensure security and compliance.

Agents using outdated tools may encounter errors. Outdated tools display a Stale status. When a tool attached to an agent is Stale, Agent Designer deactivates the Test Agent window while an agent is in Edit mode. You must update tools to begin testing your agent again.

note

You need to update MCP tools from an imported agent before deploying it. Like other tools, imported agents do not contain authentication credentials in MCP tools.

Updating tools

To prevent errors, update tools using the following steps.

  1. Navigate to Agentstudio > Agent Garden > Sources.
  2. Select the MCP server. Agentstudio automatically checks for updates.
  3. A yellow notification indicates that the server has stale tools that need updating. Select Discover & Select Tools. You can view a list of tools and their status.
  4. Select Review to see changes. Tools with changes display what updates are being applied to tools.
  5. Click Save. Tools are updated and status changes to Active.
