Connect Enterprise overview

Updated

Connect Enterprise provides a unified, hosted gateway that lets AI clients and agents connect to tools from business applications and MCP servers. It combines Boomi Connect’s connector capabilities with the MCP Gateway functionality of Boomi AI Gateway

For example, an AI client, such as Claude Desktop, can use a tool from the Gmail MCP server to retrieve email labels and display the returned information.

Key concepts

An MCP server exposes tools that an AI client can discover and invoke. A tool is an individual operation, such as retrieving a Gmail label or creating an email draft. A Boomi Connect connector provides access to an underlying application or service. An AI client, such as Claude Desktop, uses available tools to carry out a request.

An MCP endpoint is the connection address an AI client uses to connect to the gateway. Connect Enterprise uses a single MCP endpoint through which an AI client can access tools from multiple MCP servers. A profile determines which servers and tools an administrator makes available to assigned end-users or groups. Service authorization lets an end-user authorize access to an underlying application when that service requires it.

An MCPX instance provides runtime infrastructure for MCP connections. It differs from an MCP server, which exposes tools.

How Connect Enterprise works

Connect Enterprise provides separate administrator and end-user interfaces. Administrators configure MCP servers and tools available to end-users. End-users authorize applications when required, connect AI clients, and use tools available to them.

The administrator and end-user interfaces support different parts of the same workflow.

In the administrator interface, you can:

  • Manage MCP servers: Add MCP servers from Boomi Connect connectors or enter the connection details of a custom MCP server. You can also review an MCP server's tools, its scan results, and risk information.
  • Configure profiles and tool availability: Assign MCP servers to profiles, select the tools available through each profile, and associate users or groups with profiles.

In the end-user interface, you can:

  • Use available servers and authorize applications: View the MCP servers available to you and authorize access to underlying services when required.
  • Connect AI clients: Select an AI client, such as Claude Desktop, and follow the client-specific connection instructions.
  • Use tools: Ask an AI client to perform an operation using an available tool.

After end-users invoke tools, administrators can review tool call metrics, end-user and AI client activity, and MCPX instance information. End-sers can review tool use and other recorded MCP events.
